Mt. Tam and San Francisco Outskirts

As we left Southern California behind, we continued up Hwy 1 through San Francisco and over the Golden Gate Bridge. While San Francisco is a giant city, it’s amazing how easy it is to escape the urban areas and get lost in nature. On this trip, we skipped the city entirely and followed Hwy 1 as it turns into a bit of a roller coaster through winding hills before it reaches the Pacific again. After spending the night in the little town of Stinson Beach, we hopped off the 1 and onto the Panoramic Hwy (how can you pass that up?) to Mt. Tamalpais State Park and hiked fantastic trails through open meadows looking out over the Pacific and into twisting forests of gnarly trees to towering redwoods before making our way to the top to enjoy the breathtaking view looking out over San Francisco.

After our Mt. Tam adventures we were back on the road for a beautiful evening drive past Tomales and Bodega Bays and the Sonoma Coast State Park as well as our last stop along Hwy 1, a little coastal community called Jenner. Here we splurged a little and rented a little cabin on a cliff overlooking the Russian River as it empties into the Pacific Ocean. Takeout from the little restaurant next door, a few cold brews and a breathtaking view of twilight on the Pacific by fireplace was a grand finale for this Hwy 1 road trip. Tomorrow we head inland.
